Frequently Asked Questions
Do petrol vehicles pay RUC?
Right now, petrol drivers pay fuel tax at the pump (called fuel excise). Diesel and EV drivers already pay RUC directly. By 2027, the system is changing — all vehicles, including petrol, will move to distance-based RUC.
How will RUCSmart actually help me?
RUCSmart is your toolkit to stay compliant without stress. We help you:
- Stay up to date with NZTA and government announcements in plain English.
- Compare your current fuel tax costs with future RUC costs.
- Track your kilometers and get smart reminders before you run out.
- Download reports to prove compliance.
Is my personal data safe with RUCSmart?
Yes. Privacy is a top priority. We comply with New Zealand privacy laws and keep your data secure. RUCSmart only stores the information needed to calculate, track, and report your RUC usage. We will never sell or share your personal data.
What if I don’t keep up with RUC payments?
If you run out of RUC distance and keep driving, you can face fines and penalties. That’s why RUCSmart sends reminders and gives you an easy way to keep on top of licenses. Our goal is to make sure you never get caught short.
How much does RUCSmart cost?
We’re keeping it simple and affordable: $2.99/month for the first 1,000 customers who join the waitlist. Once you’re locked in, that price stays the same for life. After that, standard pricing will apply.
Is RUCSmart official government software?
No — RUCSmart is independent. We’re not NZTA or Waka Kotahi. We’re everyday Kiwis building a plain-English toolkit that helps drivers and businesses prepare for the changes ahead. We keep up with government announcements so you don’t have to.
